The Akili Academy leadership team traveled to Los Angeles from June 26-27 to participate in the annual Excellent Schools Network (ESN) Summit. Akili was founded with the support of Building Excellent Schools (BES), an organization whose sole mission is to raise academic achievement in underserved communities. ESN is a subset of BES; schools must meet high academic standards to be a part of ESN.
The conference focused on the idea of leading with urgency. Presenters such as Julie Jackson, Sue Walsh, and Dr. Don Shalvey (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) spoke to the attendees about the importance of college persistence, setting a culture and expectation of excellence, and encouraging rigor in the classroom.
In addition to attending the annual ESN conference, leaders from the entire Crescent City Schools network are able to take part in Weekend Warriors (intensive professional development workshops) and LENS training (a one-year program to develop school leaders) throughout the year.
