Daryl Williams is the Dean of Athletics at Akili Academy of New Orleans, where he provides guidance and direction to the school’s athletic program. He also leads the design and development of the Health & Physical Education Program. Under his direction, the Health & Physical Education Program provides K-8 scholars with a variety of activities in the areas of team sports, indoor/outdoor activities, cardiovascular fitness, strength training and daily lessons in human health. In his first year of leading the school’s athletic program, the Akili Gators won 11 New Orleans Charter School Athletic Association (NOCAA) City Championships in multiple sports. As a result of the schools’ success in athletics, the program now regularly receives invitations to compete in public and private school athletic tournaments throughout the school year. Teamwork, leadership, discipline, effort, self-motivation and communication are essential life skills that scholar-athletes at Akili Academy refine by competing in team sports.
Prior to joining Akili Academy, Daryl spent 7 years with the US Department of Labor’s Job Corps Program. He held the position of Supervisor of Recreation at the Gulfport Job Corps Center in Gulfport, MS. He was later elected to serve as the Job Corps Athletics & Activities Association (JCAAA) Region III Commissioner. In that role, Daryl coordinated and directed the Job Corps athletic programs in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. During his tenure as commissioner, Daryl developed strong relationships with college and university Athletic Directors to provide scholarships to JCAAAA Scholar Athletes. Through this network, Daryl was able to send over 200 Job Corps Scholar Athletes to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) with several going on the compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Daryl is a member of the Omicron Lambda Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity For Men, Delta Chapter of the Society of Public Health Education and American Public Health Association. Daryl holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Kinesiology (Health Promotion/Health Education) from Grambling State University.
